I agree. It would save on having to use other link shortening services that may or may not be supported in the long term (e.g. Goggle's now defunct short link service).
An even shorter option would be great too, but that would require another domain name. e.g. eschol.org
Some users feel that eScholarship's URLs are too long. "escholarship.org/3qs8f8qx" would be more useful for including directly in presentations than "escholarship.org/uc/item/3qs8f8qx"
