New: Institutional affiliation support (ROR)

Janeway now integrates with the Research Organization Registry (ROR), the standard directory of research institutions. Authors' institutional affiliations can be matched and imported automatically, editors and admins can review and manage this affiliation data, and it now flows through to downstream outputs like Crossref XML. Readers will soon be able to see authors' ROR-linked affiliations on article pages.

New: CRediT contributor roles

Support has been added for the Contributor Role Taxonomy (CRediT), which lets authors specify their exact contribution to a paper (e.g., writing, data curation, funding acquisition). These roles are now visible throughout the workflow for authors, editors, reviewers, and typesetters, and are included in exported metadata.

Typesetting is now part of the core system

The separate Typesetting plugin has been merged directly into Janeway. Related display bugs were also fixed, including articles in the typesetting stage not showing up correctly on the kanban board, and typesetters now being able to see competing-interest declarations.

Author and submission improvements

The author submission screen has been updated, and several bugs were fixed around linking existing author accounts, duplicate organization records, and blank author records being created unexpectedly during ORCID searches. Affiliation text now displays cleanly without stray spaces or commas, and editors can hide certain affiliation fields when not needed.

Editorial workflow fixes

Conditional-accept and desk-rejection email templates were added, a bug preventing editors from withdrawing a review was fixed, and reviewers with inactive accounts can now be selected properly when using one-click review access. The "active reviews" count is now accurate, and users are returned to the correct page after completing side tasks in the workflow.

Repository (preprints) fixes

The repository search by affiliation feature, which had been broken, now works correctly. The submission agreement checkbox is no longer pre-ticked for repository submissions, and a bug in the repository activity log view was fixed.

DOI and Crossref

A bug preventing anonymous articles from being deposited with Crossref was fixed.

General fixes and reliability

This release also includes a number of smaller fixes: fixed server errors when deleting articles or authors, a fix for malformed ORCID tokens causing errors, corrected login page and image display issues, HTML no longer displaying as raw text in a couple of forms, and various background error conditions (email/notification delivery checks, timezone handling for dates) resolved.
