Most eScholarship metadata — titles, authors, publication dates, etc. — is not subject to copyright protection. To the extent that eScholarship metadata may be protected by copyright, including rights arising from eScholarship’s contributions in selecting, modifying, correcting, enhancing, or arranging the metadata, the University of California waives any rights it may have and dedicates those rights to the public domain pursuant to a Creative Commons Public Domain Dedication (CC0). This follows the recommendation of the UC Libraries Metadata Sharing Policy.
This policy does not include the text of abstracts in eScholarship, which have been written by the authors of the publications the abstracts describe. Like the articles with which they are associated, the University of California generally does not own the copyright in these abstracts and does not have the ability to license them or dedicate them to the public domain. Use of the abstracts is governed by copyright law in your jurisdiction. In the United States, for instance, consider whether or not your use would qualify as fair use.
We encourage the access, use, and sharing of eScholarship metadata via OAI-PMH or the eScholarship API.
